Default Which Gloves?

Hi all,

I'm taking a riding course in June and have all of my gear except gloves. I'm undecided as to what gloves to get.

What do you think is better? Gauntlets or not gauntlets? Either way I'm looking to get armored knuckles.

Pretend you can only own one pair of gloves, what do you get?

EDIT:I forgot, I plan on riding mostly around town, possibly some short jaunts on the highway.

I voted non gauntlets. My first pair of gloves were short, the Icon Super-Duty gloves. Later I got the Joe Rocket Razors gauntlet style gloves for highway riding to offer better protection. It turned out the cuff part didn't fit over my jacket so I cut off the cuffs so they're short now.

Try on different pairs of gloves and go for what's the most comfortable for you. Wearing any type of glove will offer better protection than no gloves at all.

I love the gaunlets, but if it's really hot out I will wear regular gloves.

For both weather and abrasion protection, there's no substitute for a gauntlet cuff. Most textile motorcycle jackets are designed for them with narrow, uncluttered sleeves. I also have a pair of short mesh gloves, but they feel like gardening gloves after wearing my Alpinestars all spring.

2-2, huh? This is hardly the decisive poll I was hoping for.

I would break the tie but my advice is to buy both.

I use both also, sorry about the poll. I bought mechanics gloves from a supplier that sells tools etc to mechanics. They fit snugly, made from kevlar and have anti-vibration padding/gel in the palms and fingers. Bought the gauntlet style for riding when 40s or below (personal tolerances vary)

I always wear gauntlets. Plus they come in handy at halloween when dressing up as a pirate.

Do a comparison, wear a different type on each hand.

I voted gauntlets just cause you live in Canada where I assume there are more cold days than hot. The truth is you really need both. I have a set of Tour Master Coldtex gauntlets for the cold days ($30) and I usually wear dirt bike gloves when its hot.

I voted gauntlets because having cold air shoot up the arm of your jacket sucks. I've got some Joe Rocket vented gauntlets that have worked pretty well so far, plenty of vents. But for the really warm days I'll probably go back to wearing the short cuff gloves.

I voted no gauntlet. Honestly I would get both, for me it's not a major issue as GA has a lot more hot days than cold days. Canada is probably the opposite though...
