Riding Pants

After reading the article about "Can you pass the sander test" I am starting to re-evaluate my riding gear. The area that I could not pass that sander test is my pants. I do most of my riding back and forth to work. I ride mostly on the freeway with Dockers on. So, I was looking for overpants that I could put on over my work pants. I found the Tourmaster Venture pants which look good. My concern is how warm of weather can I ride with them on. They look to be perfect for spring and fall but way to warm in the summer. Does anyone have these pants that could let me know how warm they get. I am looking for somthing textile to go with my Joe Rocket textile jacket.

I've got Joe Rocket textile pants, not sure which ones, got them on Ebay with the jacket, so they zip together. They have several vents that you can zip open when it's warm out and they're nice and cozy in the cold weather.

Roger, you'd want something that allows as much airflow as possible. I wouldn't go with a waterproof shell. My Joe Rocket pants have a waterproof liner, which doesn't impede airflow when it's out.

You are correct in your assumptions about the TourMaster Venture pants. I have had a pair for 2 years and I absolutely love them. They come with a liner, but I have never used it. In temps 35°(F) or lower I do need to add a pair on long johns under my Dockers, and on the other end of the thermometer, the max I want to ride with these on is about 72-73°. Any higher and I start to sweat. I should mention that I'm 5'8" and 153, so I don't carry a lot of ... ahem ... insulation.

Thanks for the reply. Most of the reviews that I have read say they are GREAT for the winter but warm in the summer. I found the FieldSheer four season pants on the web that have a mesh outside but a quilted liner. The seem to have a wider range. I will need to look around and see what I like. I defenately want to add some protection for my legs and knees. I might need to buy pants for spring and fall and pants for summer.

For the past 2 summers I only wore Dockers with a mesh jacket. This year I'm going the cheap route with mesh pants. MotoDirect has them for $50. It's got to be better than nothing.

I recently bought a pair of Motoport Ultra II Kevlar pants. These are not cheap but IMHO there the best money can buy

My wife and I just received our order from MotoDirect for the $50 mesh pants. I've worn them a few times already in mid-70s temps and they are nice and cool. I suspect they will be fine for summer riding. The padding they have on the knees and hips is pretty minimal, but compared to a pair of jeans I suspect they would provide much better protection in a slide.

I ended up buying the Olympia Airglide II pants. They have the removable inner liner for cold weather. The outside is mesh for warm weather. I rode with them in 40 degree F weather on the freeway and they were fine. I have not tried them in the warm weather yet because it has not warmed up yet in Northeast Ohio. So far I think these pants are going to work great.

I went with a pair of RHINO leather trousers alright for summer riding i ride wearing shorts underneath them in summer and jeans in the winter months. You dont realy notice the heat in summer while you are moving its only when you stop for fuel or food but IMHO leather gives better abrasion resistance then textile, have found this out the hard way.

I agree that leather gives better abrasion protection. However, when I think of leather pants or chaps I think of the Village People.

Until then...it's a pair of Levi's.
