Default Cold (and I mean cold) weather jacket, pants

I'm planning on riding to work, 35 minutes/35 miles/75mph, as far into autumn as I can. Barring snow on the roads, I'll go down to about 15*F if I can. It's my self-imposed adventure for the year.

I was all gung-ho to shell out for a Roadcrafter, but now I'm rethinking since comparable gear can be had for much less. I'm thinking Firstgear Kilimanjaro 5.0 and Olympia AST. I plan on using my existing Joe Rocket Alter Ego pants for now with the water/air proof liner.

I realize we don't have a lot of adventure riders here, but I thought I'd start a conversation anyway. My needs:

  • Warm into the teens (with extra layers underneath)
  • Waterproof (don't need to be adding the Hefty bag in November)
  • 3/4 length for good overlap with the pants
  • Good utility (pockets, etc.)
  • Good protection (a real riding jacket, 500 denier or better plus armor)
  • Under $400 or so
Thoughts?
