Thermo 1-piece Suit

Thanks. That looks like a good solution. Ever ridden in the cold? You are in Texas, after all.

that's a nice suit... i like firstgear.. .they make some good stuff.

i'm a bit more north... heh. i ride in the cold. that suit with some layers underneath would work well i think.
worry about the core and the hands... once your hands get numb... it's not fun.

I just wanted everyone to know that Clint has not been telling us the truth about his ride to work, it's not straight like he said, I rode that section of road yesterday from St Cloud to Little Falls, and I distinctly remember at least three curves. Lol

Wow what a boring section of road, I think rather than cold weather gear what he really needs is a buzzer built into his seat that goes off every few miles to keep him awake.

Dang it, Rick. I think I missed you by moments. I got distracted with a project and got outside late. I wanted to throw something at you when you went by.

HA!! I now have over sized insulated coveralls that I am able to put over my armored jacket. They are very warm and fairly inexpensive!! I even have cheepo gauntlet gloves and also wear silk liner gloves (about $10), that do the trick fairly well, but I think that maybe some hand guards would help even more. I have a barn door for a shield so I have a good deal more protection than you would. The only part of my body that gets just a tad cold is my chin and knees, easily solved with one layer of light protection.

One morning {late January of 2008} it was 15*f when I stepped across my bike to leave for work. There have been numerous days of around 20* to 25*f that I have ridden in to work.
On the mornings that it is below 32*f I will add a chemical hand warmer under the Firstgear Suit, don't put the hand warmer {they get hot up to 120*f} real close to you.
Problem I have is my right thumb getting cold {cold enough it goes to hurting}.

I'm surprised to hear that. I guess I shouldn't be. On the day it was 15 there, it was probably -25 here.

Hi, Clint, I wear the Wal Mart brand of similar Carhard's insulated coveralls. I also have a pair of insulated ski bibs I wear to alternate between the two. I have a nice pair of heavy insulated thermals I got at the sporting goods store similar to Cabella's. I wear wool socks and have found them to keep the feet nice and toasty..I try and not ride under 40 degrees no matter if sun or not.
I ride 13 miles hwy one way and also wear ski gloves. I have a bacalava I wear and have found that to keep the neck and face quite toasty as well..
Good luck on finding your gear. I hope my suggestions have helped.

Thanks.

I think my goal is to not have pull on (and off, standing in the hallway at work) two sets of gear. I insist on good protection, so I'd have to wear my regular jacket and pants under these insulated options. I'd rather invest in a real riding jacket that I can get off in one step. Plus, Carhartt and snowmobile suits are usually not waterproof in any way.

Most snowmobile gear that's not leather is waterproof & would very likely be your best option for down to about the freezing mark, after that for the speed & distance your riding I think your going to have to have heated gear, of course the best option would be a heated snowmobile suit.WarmGear Heated Clothing

No, I haven't. I have a couple months to think about it. I've gotten patient in my old age (read: cheap) and tend to wait for clearance deals. I've saved a crapload of money over the years just by planning ahead, then waiting for online buys.

I only got one cause it was free.. but other than that I can't see spending a few K on a machine you can only use like 15 times a year.

Clint is does get cold in Tejas. The bay of Corpus Christi froze over back in the early 80's. Plus that and it snows horizontal.

I remember in the winter of 2004, when I was in Ft. Worth, scraping off frost on the windshield of the Camaro with a credit card b/c I threw away my scraper. I never thought I'd have to use it in Texas lol. Also, I considered myself lucky that winter b/c it snowed one day and everybody was freaking out. I however wore my wool coat and was grand; probably the only one dressed for the occasion

Olympia AST coat
Olympia Ranger pants
Tourmaster Polar something-or-other gloves (textile) with liners
Logical layering of clothes
Half mask with some length to tuck/hang inside coat collar
Two pairs of socks

I ride until significant snow up here in Cleveland. Once that happens, the roads are covered in salt and it gets pulverized by tires. That dusty salt gets in every nook and cranny.

Half mask is a necessity for me. Without it the nose starts dripping and my face from the nose down becomes an awful mess. And this is all with a full face helmet. Also helps keep your breath from going right up to your glasses or face shield. Have to plug Scorpion here. Their shields really are 'no fog'. My glasses will fog up occasionally but the shield stays good.

I was good down to the upper 20's on the highway. Didn't get out after that because of the salt dust I mentioned. I do have a MS Fats windsreen that I put on the bike around the middle of October. Cuts down more wind than the Poptop which I use the rest of the time. No lowers but I bet they'd help a bunch if your bike is without a fairing(sp?).

I was all set to buy the AST when I came across this thread. Damn internet.

Before anyone tells me I'm stupid, I want to push the button on this stuff. It's hard to spend half a grand after being off work so long, though. The good news is that I have a loaner car for the winter that I'm paying for with labor. That'll certainly help.

I find it a lot easier to just pack a rain suit.
