Post Ride Report - Eastern Oregon

Last week I took off with four friends on a four day trip to Eastern Oregon, here's my picture heavy trip report...

Thursday morning we met up at Twede's Cafe in North Bend, WA. This is where Twin Peaks was filmed. Breakfast was expensive and I had a biscuit that was about the size of my head!

The first gas stop, Ellensburg, WA. My BMW R1200RT on the left, Patrick's BMW K1200S on the right.

Yakima Canyon Road from Ellensburg to Yakima, WA. Lots of tame but fun twisties and great views. A fair amount of traffic. I was playing it cool but my buddies got pulled over by the WSP. They got off with a warning from a very friendly patrolman. Lucky!

On the road in Washington. I'd say this was the middle of nowhere but it had roads so it must be somewhere.

At the Maryhill Stonehenge overlooking the Columbia River on the WA side.

It's a memorial to local soldiers and sailors who died in WWI. Pretty amazing and very large.

Washington Stonehenge - A Tribute to WWI in Maryville

The view from Stonehenge, that's Mt Hood in Oregon in the distance.

The view outside my tent door on the morning of the second day, that thing followed me everywhere I went!

We camped at the city park in Spray, Oregon. The John Day river runs right through there

Breakfast stop at the local grocery store/pizza/video rental/gas station/bait shop on the morning of the second day

On the road the morning of the second day

John Day Fossil Beds

A sample of the scary stuff that roamed Eastern Oregon millions of years ago

On the morning of the second day Tim was hit by/hit a deer right here

The deer jumped out of those bushes on the left, hit his leg, ripped his saddlebag open end to end then spun off the rear wheel in the ditch on the right. The whole thing happened right in front of me but we always ride with 2-4 seconds following distance so I had no trouble avoiding the debris. Tim held his bike steady and didn't go down. The deer hit right on his armor, if he'd been wearing jeans or chaps he'd had been hurt really badly. Yay gear!

NF25 going up to the Hell's Canyon overlook. NF25 from near Halfway, Oregon all the way over to Joseph was about 60 miles of non-stop twisties. Signs that said 25mph corners for the next 6 miles were very common. The Dragon has absolutely nothing on this! The riding was so amazing, there was almost zero traffic. I took so many corners I ended up with a horrible cramp in my shoulder. It was worth it!

Hell's Canyon, that's Idaho over there.

The lake at the park we stayed at the second night. Amazing views.

The crew riding the roads in Oregon...

Tim had recovered from the deer strike. He'd gotten a flat rear tube from the hit and had to spend the night in Baker City while we road over to Joseph. I think he drank alot that night!

Tim and his Magna in Picture Canyon. This would be his last trip on the Magna, he sold it a few days later.

The Painted Hills, pictures don't do it justice at all

On the road home on the last day, this is where the rain started.

Wet mountain roads, we are back in Western Washington for sure!

The view (or lack thereof) of Mt St Helens.

Our last lunch stop, we parted ways shortly after this

On the way home, the last hour or so, it poured rain like you can't imagine. I couldn't have gotten wetter if you threw me in a pool. It was raining so hard traffic on the highway slowed to 30mph and when it let up there were half as many cars on the road. Of course I kept riding!

All in all it was a great trip!

Great ride report. Any idea what the name of the lake you spent night 2 at?

Any chance you can add a map showing your route (Google maps?)

I need to go explore some more of this amazing state I live in.

You mean the Goldwing or the one with "BMW K1200S" on the side?

This is one freakin' awesome ride report. Great pictures. Thanks for sharing. You're making me feel bad, though. I'm on-call for work this weekend and can't get out. Your report is sheer torture to this grounded soul.

Well, there's always next weekend.
