| Puddle Runner ![]() | This is a rather practical question.. not related to the specific type of bike.. but I was putting on a new right clip-on handlebar, and it was going great.. I removed the nut that holds on the Steering Stem Upper Bracket on top of the triple tree [refer to attached picture]. I took it off, replaced the clip-on, and then now I'm trying to put it back on .. and I can't get it to seat all the way! I put it part of the way on.. then it gets stuck. I push on one side, and the other side goes up.. and vice versa.. it won't push down onto the fork. Does anyone have any tips? I have already taken a screwdriver and pryed the opening of each side just a little more so it will make the left/right rings a bit wider. That isn't working. Tips? |

| Puddle Runner ![]() | I put the bike back on the fork stand, just how it was when I took the thing off.. and it still won't seat down on it. I can push it flush to the top of the forks.. but it needs to go down about another 3/4" so I can put the nut on it.. Is putting it on a fork stand considered 'taking the weight off'? Thanks |

| Figures . . . 4th ID . . . Yeah. Loosen the components that make up the front end slightly (fork brace, lower triple clamp, front fender - I would remove the fender then the wheel after jacking it up). Then jack up the front of the bike with a floor jack underneath the frame (or use a front end lift that attaches under the triple tree. loosen the rest of the bolts a bit more. Now you can move the parts around to get the bracket on. Finger tighten the bolts (and install the wheel/fender if you took them off). Then GENTLY put the bike back on terra firma. Take measurements of the front forks in the upper bracket so that they are equal when protruding through the top. IF they are not equal, use a rubber mallet to gently tap them in place. Once they are even, tighten the UPPER bolts that hold the forks in the bracket. Push down on the front end a couple of times to allow everything to seat corectly. Retorque the rest of the bolts. - Nut

| Puddle Runner ![]() | Thanks for the reply, Nut. [What do you have against 4th ID?] I took off the fairings, and put a car jack under the exhaust headers.. i didn't think that was the best place, but it was the only sturdy and reachable place.. and I jacked up the front [it was still on the rear stand]. I slipped the upper bracket on, and it went right on, no effort. I can figure out myself how to do bike-specific things, but it's always the practicals like that, that get me every time. I'll learn. Thanks again. Handlebar replacement success. |
