Default Decompression valve problem on Savage???

Twice in the past month I have had a problem starting the bike.(2002 Savage, 1100 miles) Both times the lights came on strong, but after one very short crank of the starter everyting went dead. After a minute or two the lights come back on and it did the same thing. Each time it happened I just rolled the bike forward in neutral a few feet adn them it started an restarted.

The first time it happened the bike was very warm after 1/2 hour of highway riding. Today it was dead cold, not having been riden for 3 weeks. When it happend the first time I posted on another forum and someone suggested it could be the decompression valve not activating properly. But what I read is that the way to manually opne the decompression valve is to roll the bike backward in 2nd gear, not forward in neutral.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? If it is a decompression valve problem can it just be a simple adjustment? I understand there is an electric selenoid that is activated by the starter motor, should this be malfuctioning this early in the bikes life? Is it an expensive repair?

Looking forward to any thoughts?

Default Decompression valve on Savage

I had the same problem. Switched the power on everything working, then i squized the clutch and hit the starter button: Everything dead, no power at all. Turned out to be a bad connection of the positive pole of the battery. Cleaned and retightened, problem solved.
