Thumbs down My tach's on crack!

I've been having starting problems.. [hesitation] ever since I bought the bike. I fired the bike up cold today [choke ON], and the bike idled at over 2000rpm.. so I shut off the choke and it went down to about normal. I rode it after it warmed up.. and the bike rode better than normal! It sounded different and the acceleration was better so I said "Whoa.. but what did I do?" .. because when I disengaged the clutch to shift, it look longer for the RPMs to come down.. so then I remembered that I adjusted the idle yesterday when the fairing was off.. that can foul the spark plugs, correct?

Anyway, on point.. I brought the bike back home and turned the idle down.. just above the point where the engine thinks about dying. It sounds fine now when I ride.. just like before.. BUT, the tach's on drugs! It has a mind of it's own.. sometimes it goes up and down as normal.. other times, it looks stuck, and flies up to 3-4k, back down.. sometimes hitting zero.. it's all over the place. I didn't change anything as far as the gauge is concerned. I can tap it and get some funny responses out of it, kinda like the needle's stuck..

What can I do about it?
