Default Recommendations for Oil

I am almost at 4,000 miles, yep got it 3/26/05 and putting the miles on. Was wondering what I should use for oil during the change?. I have been told you can switch to synthetic but to wait at least until you hit around the 4,000 miles mark. But I have also seen and heard about people having trouble with synthetic oils in there bikes, recently seen quoted by another member that you could have two exact bikes one with reg oil and the other with synthetic and have the one with syn, slip? Am I looking at a 50/50 chance of this happening, or should I just forget about running synthetic all together?. I run synthetic oils in all of my other vehicles and noticed a better start in colder and warmer weather, and in my mustang which is stored in the winters for 5 or so months has no issues after being brought out. Thanks again for any input
