Default Chain ?

can a loose chain cause trouble getting into 1st/2nd gear? by trouble, i mean it not exactly going in smoothly... all the other gears, in perfect. And the trouble is inconsistent..sometimes no problem at all, other times shows the trouble.

Would it also affect bike power (as in the transfer of power to the rear wheel?)

and... are the markings on the swingarm dependable for aligning the rear wheel? help!

The chain shouldn't have any effect on the transmission going into gear. Yes you will lose some power during transfer from a loose chain, but you definately do not want it too tight. The markings are dependable to get you in the ballpark area. There are a couple of different methods but I usually just use the markings and then turn the rear wheel on the stand. You can see if the wheel is off by much by watching the space between the wheel and the chain. Not a scientific method and it is open to errors but so far has worked for me.

The first question I'd ask is how's your oil? Old oil can make a good tranny turn bad.

As for the rear wheel alignment - there's a good string technique for doing that, and once it's done you'll know how accurate your swingarm marks are. Search here and the 'net.

I agree with Rowdy. Are you near the end of your oil-changing cycle? My Bandit shifts like a bag of fritos when it gets near hte end of the cycle.

I recommend replacing chain with some good-used rubber bands. They are cheap and work great!
