Smile '81 GS450 Firing issue

Hello all. I can't believe it took me the better part of a year to find this very active forum. Great to see all of you. (ok.. now comes the actual post)

My '81 GS450T has been running pretty well since I purchased it last Spring. Lately, it has lost 50% of it's power (at least), and tends to misfire like crazy. I pulled the plugs and found that one plug showed signs of overheating (white), while the other plug has lots of carbon deposits on it. Now, I'm no mechanic, but this looks to me like one cylinder is too hot and the other is too cold.

The bike does not have the factory exhaust, but rather a two-to-one exhaust. I have spoken with some homegrown grease heads and they suggest that I re-jet the carbs due to the different exhaust. Could this be the case? I can't imagine why I have managed to ride this bike for months, only to find that I should re-jet the carbs. The previous owner had installed the mod exhaust well over a year before I purchased it (which would make almost two years). Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else I might check before I take the hit and re-jet? Thanks!!
