Default GN250 motor into GZ250

I am a real dumbass when it comes to bikes, so answer slowly and in small words please.

I have a 2001 GZ250 Marauder that some bald idiot let run out of oil. Motors for this beastie are as rare as hens teeth here in Oz, and the general advice I can get is the GN250 motor is the same, just less chrome. Problem here is the GN250 is nearly as hard to get.

So I got me a '80s vintage motor and gearbox, and proceeded with heart transplant. All the other problems are solved, just this one to go.

The ($100) service manual says the pickup coil (for the ingnitor timing) should have a resitance between 450 and 600 Ohms, and have an otput of 5 volts. Sure enough, the old motor is 500 Ohms. The replacement motor is 150 Ohms, and as near as I can tell has an output of 200mV. (The bike and motor have different connectors, but I made an adaptor cable).

Because of my electronics background, I figured in my simplistic way, that perhaps it is just a voltage level problem, so I tried a 5:1 turns ratio audio transformer between the two. No go.

Does anyone here have any directions they can point me in please?
Any clues as to the difference btween the ignition triggering of an '80s GN and a '01 GZ?
Should I chase an ignitor from an '80s GN?

Oh, btw, the GN motor has an extra plug on it. I assume this is for oil and temp sensors?

Thanks folks.
