Default Tachometer problem....

Greetings,

Yes, my tachometer problem is that it's not working! I have a 1982 GS450T Suzuki, so the bike is not too complicated. I looked at the housing that connects the tachometer and engine, and found a metal wire running within it. Unlike the inner metal wire that connects the speedometer, I can remove the tachometer metal wire. I fiddled around with it & nothing works. Actually, now that I think of it, every once and a while it just magically begins to work....then some times it works but is not calculating the RPM's correctly. I am a novice so I'm not sure if that metal wire is even suppose to be able to be pulled out. Maybe I should just replace the metal wire?? I don't know...
