That should work out OK. It might actually need some attention......about the time you SWIM across the big pond, that is.

I am SOOOO ashamed.

Well, actually just a little bit.

As usual, you are 100% correct and I wasn't meaning to dispute what you said in any way......although it probably came out that way.

What I was trying to head off was the exact thing currrently being discussed: the belief that all charging systems are the same and taking DrBob's Excellent Advice and trying to apply it to other models.

My little Suzuki worked more like the Shadow than the VZ800.

voltage isn't going to tell you everything either. amperage also comes into play

The statement you made is true only sometimes.

I said: "I am telling you that your simple meter readings, by themselves, do NOT indicate a problem."
I stand by that statement........the WHOLE statement, not just part of it.
Your shop had to do additional tests to be sure there really was a problem; that's all I was saying.
when you said when it is running 12v or less, theres a problem. well, a fully charged battery is 12.6volts. thats six 2.1v cells, if you didn't know that. so anything below that is a problem. the voltage should stay around the same above idle or a little higher all the way up to redline. it's the amperage that is going to change depending on the system load and battery charge. if the voltage actually when down with increase in rpm, thats a problem. if it was enough of a drop in voltage, the headlight would actually get dimmer which wouldn't be a good thing while your going down the road

Last post in this thread for me.

As for me knowing how a battery is made and how it works.......I guess you haven't been reading posts here very long !!!

Nothing is absolute, including the 12.6 nominal voltage. It may vary a tenth or two......and the meter you are using might be off a bit too. Once you get below 12.0V measured, you can be pretty sure there is a problem; above that it might be iffy.

And, as for the second part, that is absolutely WRONG and that was my whole point in getting into the thread in the first place.

The regulator function of some systems works differently and is more sensitive. THE LAST 2 BIKES I have had, one Suzuki and one Honda, sit at about 13V at idle and actually DO GO DOWN about a tenth or two as the engine speed increases...........IF the battery is totally 100% charged and the load in nominal. For those models, that is perfectly normal when everything is charged up. To test them, you first must discharge the battery a bit by leaving the light on for a while; THEN you should see the voltage go up with an increase in speed. I haven't tried it yet but I suspect it still won't be the 14.5-15 V. like you see on some other systems.

Each model can be different; knowing what is normal and "right" for one may mean nothing on a different model.

but, yet you act like you know everything about every bike. I bet you even make your own batteries that are only 12 volts. yeah, in a perfect world they would be 12.6 , but they can vary by a tenth or two, but not down to 12volts. i actually have read a lot of your posts and others, and you know what, you never act like you wrong. I think you even said it yourself that u use a cheap meter. I use a fluke meter. i will trust that anyday of the week over you. your probably just an old man too stuck in his ways to even relize the your telling a bunch of BS

Thats my final post

No I'm one too...

I was out and about today and a dude I spoke to had a Suzuki V strom 650 with a top box on it...anyway we were talking about bikes in general and he says try mine out for seat comfort...I could barely lift my leg high enough to clear the box!! he was huge...read portly...and he had no trouble.

I wonder if our 'friend' is really rickety cricket?????
