Default Strange noise

Let me start by saying I'm no mechanic, I just wanted to get an idea of what to say when I go see a mechanic. The story: I was going along very slowly on my Suzuki C-50 Limited in a neighborhood street when the driver of a large delivery truck decided to crush me like a bug. I was "lugging" along (maybe 20 mph in 2nd gear) and had to throw it on it to get out of the way. When I did that, it made a funny noise but I don't recall what it sounded like exactly...just a strange noise. Now, when I hit the throttle hard it makes what I would call a popping or a slapping noise sometimes (doesn't always do it). This seems more likely to occur if I am lugging along and then hit the gas. I know I shouldn't lug along but it happens sometime when it seems that the speed limit puts me between gears. I feel more comfortable lugging a bit then over revving. I am guessing I may have messed up something in the valve train or in the drive train. I can't seem to tell where it is coming from. I did get the noise one time by revving the engine in neutral so that may eliminate the drive train, I don't know. Any ideas? Thanks. Jim
