Question Lowering Links Homemade. Help needed

I was looking at purchasing some lowering links for my 2005 Boulevard C50T. I'm not sure whether to go with the 2", 2-1/2", or the 3". However, when I found these lowering links, I was very dissapointed . It seems kind of lame to have to spend $50-60 on two flat pieces of steel with holes in each end... so the point being made, heres my questions.

1. This goes out to anybody that has lowering links installed on their bikes, particularly on a C50. I can't decide on how much to lower it, so I was needing some input or suggestions on which to get and how it handles afterwards.

2. I was wondering if anybody knew where I could find the schematics or dimensions on these lowering links. I have a friend who runs a machine shop who will make them for me for free. I just need the dimensions. Thanks.
