Finally found some more information on how to check the error codes on the link site that I mentioned in a previous post today. According to the dealer book, if you disconnect the battery, the error codes are erased. To bring up an error code again, you need to jumper the dealer plug and crank it for approxamately 6 seconds. Took about 8 by my count but it finally came up with an error code of C12...which is just what I suspected it was, the fracking Crankshaft Position sensor which is part of the stator...dammit, I shouldn't have to replace these ever friggin year. The mech at the dealer says the heat out here kills them. Damn it would be nice if someone could come out with an aftermarket, heavier duty unit so you can replace the piece of crap that Suzuki puts in. My 22 year old GPZ had 90k on it with the original charging system in it and never had an issue like this. Well, spent the day before yesterday taking everything off, checking all the connections and cleaning them with electronics cleaner. Still get a good crank but am getting no fire to the plugs. When I grounded the plug to the block and cranked, no spark at all I tried this with both plugs/wires. I'm thinking that the chances of both coils going out at the same time are pretty small so it would have to be something in between. I checked the CKP(?? signal generator) sensor for resistance and got the specified resistance range as outlined in the shop manual. So I'm thinking that that is not the issue. As soon as I get some alligator clips that I can attach to my voltmeter I'll check it for voltage output. Am I wrong in assuming that these things just don't gradually die but either work or not? When I first started having the issue, I was getting off work and going home. Bike would crank but that was about it. I ended up running the battery down. Left the bike in the parking garage and had a buddy run me down to the nearest bike shop. They charged the battery and said it was good, though being over 2 years old, it might be a good idea to change it. Took it back to the parking garage, installed in on the bike and after a couple of tries, voila' it started. Ran rough for a couple of minutes but smoothed out and rode home normally. I even stopped to pickup some beer on the way home and it started fine again. Next morning, same thing, cranking but no starting. As I had to work, I didn't get to do anything that day and got a ride to work. Next morning, Saturday, I had read something somewhere about someone turning the key switch to park, and then to run and their bike started. So I figured what the heck, I'll try it. And sure as heck, it started. I'm thinking that's just coincidental. Rode it a good 15 miles or so up the road back to the dealers, he hooked it up to the meter, charging system was working fine. Battery went back up in voltage after starting etc etc. He couldn't find anything wrong. He even started it up and stopped it several times trying to get it to fail...nothing. Rode it around for a bit, got home. Rode it a little on Sunday, nothing major, just a few miles. Monday morning, started right up, rode to work. Stopped in the parking lot above the parking garage to have a smoke before going down into the garage. Started it up after that, noted that it sounded a little wheezy and didn't start immediately like it does normally when it's warmed up. Thought that this was a bad omen...sure as heck, go to leave work, same damn thing. Cranky, no starty......Left it overnight had it towed home Wednesday morning. Spent the rest of the day taking everything apart and checking connections etc. Couldn't find a damn thing wrong with it... As I said, I'm going to check the signal generator output but I suspect that's ok. The only thing I haven't checked yet as I have to get those stupid security torx drivers, is the ignition key switch I'm going to remove/clean the back of the switch. I also haven't checked the side stand switch or turn signal relay (don't know why the book lists this as a troubleshooting step for no spark or poor spark..but..) Generally, from what I understand, if the side stand switch is messed up, it won't crank at all correct? And what the heck does the turn signal relay have to do with the starting circuit? Anyway, can't afford to take it to the stealer right now as I'm broke but I really need to get this puppy up and running. Any other suggestions would be helpful...... |
