Default 1996 GSF600 - Can't Get it to Start...

SSDD -- traded around a bit to get a '96 Bandit 600. It's been sitting in a garage for a bit over a year since the original owner got a new bike... Blah, Blah, Blah... Like I said, SSDD...
  • ~ 8,000 on the bike
  • Replaced the plugs
  • New Gas
  • Changed the engine oil

I have not yet run a compression check, with only 8K on the bike; I would not normally suspect this to be a huge issue.

In [VERY] simplified terms, I believe all that it should take to get the engine to crank would be: Spark + Fuel + Compression.

When I press the start button (with the stand in the up position, the clutch engaged, and the bike in neutral [trying to isolate the safety stuff that would normally prevent start-up]) the starter motor engages, the plugs give a nice pretty, blue spark, and it sounds like it's right on the verge of coming to life.

It will back-fire, and never [ever] start.

I'm completely new at this, I have the shop manual, and I'm just wondering if there's anything that I might give a shot at which is out of the ordinary...

Worst case, I haul the bike out to my dad's... He's a retired bike mechanic... I just don't want to admit defeat this soon...

My first inclination is fuel delivery. I'm not positive that I'm getting fuel [at the appropriate time, mixture, etc] into the system properly...

Thanks.
