Probably time to take a close look at the plugs. If they are starting to foul, that might explain your cold starting problem. Loss of compression could also contribute to the problem.

Sadly, valves out of adjustment don't cause oil burning.
Oil burning is not something you can solve with an "adjustment".
I changed the plus about a month ago.

What causes loss of compression?

Hey Louis,

When a battery is cold (like in the morning) it has less power and as it get older, this becomes more predominate. I do not know what the tempartures are like where you are at, but this may be a possibility. Also when a battery is warm it has more power. That is why it would be easier to start in the afternoons.

Did the hard starting begin about a month ago?
Compression loss occurs when the piston rings are worn out OR the valves are WAY out of adjustment or warped.
Probably not likely on a fairly new bike with low mileage.

Well now, this is a little embarrasing!
Mr. Easy Rider (check your battery first), sure missed that one!
Good catch!

Temperatures are around 70F in the morning (at least they were). I'll force myself into checking the voltage in the morning.

No it started before, that was one of the reason I changed the plugs. The bike is an 2005 and has about 15000 miles on it.

Looks like I'll need to have a mechanic look at it...
