Well, being not too mechanically inclined, I was proud that when my bike dies last week, I was able to narrow down the problem to either the fuel pump or elictrical for the pump. Apart from that, I don't know how to really test either of them. All I know is that when bypassing the pump with a hand pumping syphon, the bike runns perfect.

I was just going to buy a new pump, replace it, and hope things worked, but that pump is not available anywhere apparantly. I see a few on e-bay here and there, but nothing new, and no comment saying they are sure that their pump works.

Any thoughts on buying a pump, and how to test it?

Kiss = keep it simple silly

Check your fuses, if the fuse is in tact look for corrosion on electrical contacts in the system, check for burned out wires. Barring all that, unhook the power lines and using some sort of test jumper hit the pump with straight 12 volts (from the bikes battery) and see if you can hear a click. Make sure when you do this to ground the battery and the pump, i.e. don't run the negative of the pump to the negative of the battery.

k, I have checked all fuses, they are ok. Not sure what click I am looking for, but there is nothing loud or super noticable. With tubes on, it sucks a little, and spits a little squirt occasionally. Could a "half connection" be possible, where it is underpowered, or is it all or nothing with these?

Pretty sure it's all or nothin. It may just be fouled up inside or have a hole in a diaphram. A used pump could be an option but you have to remember that even if it came off of a low mileage bike it's still 23+/- years old so the rubber components inside may have broken down given the years. Have you searched for any kind of rebuild kit for your existing pump? Hopefully someone can chime in with some information specific to your bike.

Real quick, when your by-passing your pump are you also by-passing the filter? I don't want to belittle you but I'm just running through the trouble shooting procedures I can think of.

Another thought, do you know if the fuel pump is the same on yours as on an interceptor? I can't find any listings for an 85 magna fuel pump (quick search) but I did find one for an 85 interceptor (vf700f vice 700c)

not sure about the interceptor fuel pump, that is the type of thing that I am wondering about.

I bypassed the pump while bypassing the filter and going through the filter, both worked, plus I did blow air through the filter no problem.
