Default Honda cr80 '01 Broken Piston Skirt

Couple quick questions. I'm doing my first fresh Top-end job on the is cr80 and have taken the head and cylinder off, and the piston skirt shattered and dropped into the crank area. I'm using ATF to flush it out, but wasn't sure how much oil (i'm assuming the same oil i use for the fuel mix, to put back into the crank area.)

Second question is, I have play in piston arm left and right, but no vertical play. is that correct or should there be no play left and right either? I want to make sure I don't shatter the skirt on the exhaust valves. So should I drop the $160 bucks for a new crank.

Third question is, does anybody have any tricks or links for installing the new Weisco piston and gasketts? i.e. torque #'s on the head and cylinder etc.....Thanks!

Second question first. Some amount of side play is OK with connecting rods...how much will be given in the specs for that particular engine. I would not be relying on flushing the debris from the bottom of the engine...far better to split the cases and make sure its all gone. I am not sure what you mean by the oil question...usual practice would be to re fit the cylinder/head etc and then fill to any marks...ie dipstick? Finaly any piston needs careful fitting but you should not need ring compressors for just one piston. Fit the rings to the bore and check end gap. If it needs to be adjusted we used to gently file the ends till it was within specs in the old days...probably don't have to do that any more! Fit the rings to the piston and squeeze them one at a time till the piston drops into the bore. Doing one ring at a time you should be able to get the whole piston in...having the crank set ready to spin down to BDC helps the process along. As for the gasket this should be an exact replica of the old one and the torque settings will be in the manual you need for the other specs.

Good luck

You might want to figure out what shattered the last piston before you put in a new one...

Funny... I automatically thought he shattered the skirt when he took the head and cylinder off...I never figured that the damage could have come from other sources....just shows two or more heads are better than one!
