Default Suz RF600R backfiring and dying

So, I'm extremely new to biking, like, I just bought my first bike, a '94 Suzuki RF600R with 28k miles. It'd been left sitting for a couple of years, so I changed the oil, coolant, and plugs, cleaned and recharged the K&N, charged the battery, put a new rear tire on it, and wabang, it was running like a raped ape. Luckily, there was a fuel leak that I fixed that had drained the tank, so no old fuel to deal with. The plugs that I took out looked normal. So, I really hadn't gotten it out on the highway until yesterday. I'd get it up to 5000 RPM or above and hold it there and it'd just die(basically a stall)...the tach would drop down to zero even though the clutch was still engaged and we were still doing 50. If I'd let off the fuel, in a few seconds (while we're still on the road), it'll backfire and then accelerate again until we got above 5000 RPM's again and then it'd backfire and stall again. So long as I keep it below 5000 RPMs (like, driving around town), it runs great. I changed out the fuel filter and replaced all the fuel lines while I was at it, and it made no difference. The bike starts very easily. Where should I start looking now? Exhaust? Fuel pump? Ignition? Any help'd be appreciated. Thanks.
