Default Gear Shift Linkage...OOPS!

So yesterday I finally received John's Kit forward controls. Went out and put them on, and fell in love with them. They're great! Part of the install requires lengthening the shift linkage, with parts that he supplies. Very easy to do.

Well I put everything back together, took it around the parking lot, parked it. Took it this morning to go to work, and when I exited the interstate and started slowing for the turn, I tried to downshift. Tried being the key word here. I reached out to hit the toe shifter and missed! Missed? I've never missed. Try again...missed again. I look down and see the heel toe shifter is not sitting where it should be. Then I see it. The linkage is gone, laying somewhere on 15 miles of interstate. Damn.

So now I'm stopped at a fairly busy intersection, in the front of the line of the left turn lane, stuck in 5th gear, and wondering what I'm going to do. I'm as far on the shoulder as I can be, but still preventing traffic from flowing. Damn again.

Light turns green, I rev the bike and limp it across the intersection and park it in a movie theater parking lot. I think I probably looked pretty funny, revved engine moving at like 5 mph. Haha.

Oh well. My own fault, I had a brain fart and forgot to tighten the nuts after I installed the linkage. At least nothing is broken, just missing a part.

This sucks!

Called the dealership and a new one cost's just under $7 for stock, and takes a week to arrive. Still waiting to hear from John with John's Kits to see if I can purchase just the extender, and if so, how much.

During my lunch hour I was able to manually shift it into 3rd and limped it home. It is going to get to know that garage real well for the next week or so, cuz it's not going anywhere until I get some parts.

Default Linkage

Might be a good idea to put some blue loctite on those threads as well. Recently put on a 4" floorboard extension, and the kit came with a new rod, and the instructions suggested using the loctite. Glad it did, I would have never thought to use it there.
