Default reserve fuel petcock setting

My son has an '05 GZ250. The fuel petcock has three settings (on, prime, and reserve). What setting does it need to be on when fueling and riding? He has run out of gas twice now!

Your batting average isn't too good today!
A little short on sleep lately?

Good choice in a bike!

If you (he) doesn't have a user's manual, you should get one.

The petcock is vacume operated. In the ON and Reserve positions, fuel only flows when the engine is running. The PRIME position defeats the vacume shut-off so you can fill the carb bowl if it has been emptied due to maintenance or sitting for a long time.

So.......in "normal" operation, you should never have to use PRIME. You should run it in the ON position until it stutters and then switch to RES and look for a gas station.
Better even to reset the trip ODO at each fillup and refill after 120-150 miles.

NOTE: the tiny arrow on the lever. That indicates the position it is in.
ON=front, RES=back, PRI=down.
