My 2001 VZ800 Marauder needs a new rear tire. The front is still really good but, much to my suprise, the rear is shot. My neighbor, a veteran rider of many years, tells me that rear tires don't usually last much more than 5000 miles but I find that a little hard to believe. My question is, do I need to keep matched (same brand) tires on the bike or can I go with a different brand on the back? The bike has Dunlops on it now (front and rear) but I have read good reviews of the Michelin Commander and thought I might like to try one. Is it normal and acceptable to have a different brand on each end of the bike, or am I asking for trouble? I think the Dunlops are original equipment, but they are not the original tires. Also, are there any other things I should have done while the tire is being changed? Things like wheel bearings, sprocket and brake shoes come to mind. It looks like my shoes are about 60 - 70% worn and I had a new chain done last year with no new sprockets. The shop mechanic told me I didin't need sprockets when he did the chain, but is it usually advisable to just change those things while the wheel is off? |
