I have a 2003 Raptor 660R that I am continuously fighting an up-hill battle with the carbs on. When I purchased the quad, it had a full FMF system, with a power bomb. The carbs had not been jetted, and it was obviously running way lean (surging, excessive heat, etc). I purchased an FMF jet kit to rectify the problem (FMF jet kits are apparently repackaged Dynojet kits). I went with the recommended FMF settings of 145/150 main jets, 3rd need position, and air mixture being 3 turns out. When starting the quad, it starts up immediately (full choke), and starts revving high. I look down, and after about 45 seconds, the left header pipe (if sitting on the bike) starts glowing red. I immediately turn off the engine to prevent damage from the excessive heat. What am I doing wrong? Any ideas? I am aware that the main jets have nothing at all to do with the idling. Could the air mixture screws be that off? I also noticed that when seating the air mixture screws, one side screwed in much farther than the other before feeling seated. This normal? |
