I'm used to working on car electrical, and this bike's wiring diagram is confusing the hell out of me. I hate to admit to anyone the length of my stupidity in this case but I'm desperate to get the darn thing running so I can move on with making it safe. This is a 1983 Honda Nighthawk CB550SC. It is my first street bike, and I've been in the process of getting it road-safe, in order to use it instead of my gas-hog car. Recently I've made a couple ridiculous, thoughtless, absolutely moronic mistakes in respect to this bike. I blew the 30A fuse that's in the starter relay by hooking up a new battery incorrectly (- to + and + to -). Not able to readily find new Honda fuses, and being dumb and impatient, I did something that I already knew not to do. I bought a Honda car fuse of the same shape and design, but larger, and a 45A. I bent that to fit as a temporary fix just so I could get the bike started when I was messing around with it. No problem, I thought, I'll just be extra careful when hooking things up. I put it in storage for the winter, then brought it back out recently and in trying to start it I made another moronic mistake that spelled my poor bike's (hopefully temporary) doom. There is a bolt on the motor that I usually use as a ground when I jump the bike with a jumper pack, so I don't have to pull the battery entirely out of the bike to get the thing starter. This bolt is right next to the bolt that holds the positive wire for the starter. So here's where the height of my stupidity shows: I hooked the positive side of the jumper pack up to the positive battery terminal. Then I mistakenly hooked the negative side up to the bolt for the starter's positive wire. I turned the key to ON. All the lights came on as usual. I then pressed the START button. The bike turned over a couple times as usual, then all the lights went out, the cranking stopped, and I heard a sizzling sound and saw smoke rise from the starter relay. I bought a new (used, AS-IS) starter relay from Ebay hoping that was the length of the damage, and installed it. However, that did not fix it because no matter what position I turn the key to, nothing responds. No lights come on, no buttons do anything. If I connect the + starter relay cable to the - starter relay cable (thus taking the relay out of the equation) the thing cranks over just fine, but has no spark. Now I'm starting to realize I'm in way over my head and I'm hoping some bike guru here will know what might be the cause, or might be able to at least point me in a direction. Thank you in advance for any help! |
