Default Like afterburner kicking in. Real Problem!

When I start out, I have the feeling I am only hitting on one cylinder. Just under 2000 RPM the missing cylinder appears to start firing and the bike takes off like a rocket. That's the only way I can describe this. It"s on a 97 Virago 535 and when it does this rounding a corner it becomes quite exciting to say the least. Would I be shortchanging the problem by thinking I have a bad coil that doesn't kick in properly until it has more generated electical power? It seems to do this every time now. What do you think?
