Default 82 suzuki 1100 with a "charge prob"

Hey

Im in the runnings to buy a 82 suzuki 1100... The guy says hes not afraid to take it any wear but occasionally wont charge. Im guessing its just a bad connection somewhere. I've got a little mechanical know how... Anyone think its worth the investment?

Thanks
John

Welcome, John. There are a few gaps in the story. What does "occasionally won't charge" mean? The battery dies while riding? Won't start?

My guess is that either the battery or charging system is bad and the bike holds charge until the battery goes. He may be charging it between rides. It's hard to say without more information (like asking price). You can often get a 1992 model for the same price as a 1982 model. There's quite a plateau in values there. I'd never go that old.

Older Suzuki's are sort of known for having charging systems that are marginally adaquate at best. You may be looking at a bad stator (expensive), a bad regulator/ rectifier (not too expensive), a bad battery (fairly affordable), or a loose connection/ short in a wire somewhere- easy to fix IF you can find it and expensive as hell if you have to pay a mechanic by the hour to track it down.
All that assumed the seller is telling you the truth and it is only a 'sometimes' problem. Personally, I assume anyone trying to sell me something they don't want anymore is putting everything in the best possible light. Just because he SAYS he would take it anywhere doesn't mean he actually would, and just because he says it 'occasionally' won't charge doesn't mean the problem is not serious- maybe the issue only pops up every now and then because he rarely rides the bike, or maybe he is flat out lying. I would assume the charging system is shot, and offer a price that reflects this.

+1

knock about $300 to $400 off the price and you will be able to replace the stator (if its that)....problem is it will eventually go again due to the set up....have heard a Honda regulator works wonders!
