Default Oil concerns for CBR600RR

So i am riding along in my rented 05 CBR600RR, about 10 minutes into my journey without doing anything abnormal and the engine starts ticking barely enough to hear it from my muffled helmet, I didn't think it was anything abnormal until a min later when the engine turned off. Pulled over to the side and started it again and saw the oil light going on and off. Reved it up a bit with my helmet off and the clicking was decently loud. Called the rental guy and he said to take it somewhere and put 1L of oil in the motor. Take it to a closeby shop, and they say the oil is full and they should change the oil, I called the rental guy and he said just put 1L of oil in it and they complied. Reved it up to 3000 rpm for 20 seconds as I do in my car when I get an oil change, no sounds at all. Take it back on the highway and it starts clicking really loud. Call up the rental guy and asked him if he wants me to drive it back slowly to him or if he wants to come meet me and take a look. I was about 10km away. He took the first option so I drove it back really slowly using neutral whenever possible and keeping the bike at no more than 4000 rpm using 1st 2nd and 3rd gear between 20-30mph well the engine kept clicking pretty loud.

Should I have drove this bike at all in its condition?
If I had no choice, did I do the right thing by driving in low RPM?
Is driving in 3rd or 4th gear at low speeds bad for the bike (keeping the revs steady at 3000-4000 rpm)?

Not sure if this is a common situation. I guess I just need to know these answers so when I buy a bike I will know what to do.

I'm not sure I'd rent anything from that guy again. "Just add oil"? WTF? The clicking could have been a number of things, judging by the rental guy's mechanical aptitude. Since he told you to ride it back, I'd have done it. I'd never do it on my bike, though.

What exactly are you checking for by revving for 20 seconds? If it's low enough on oil that you'd actually hear something, you're probably damaging the engine by doing that.

You have some strange mechanical ideas, I'll say that much.

I would guess valves are out of spec and you're hearing them clatter against the cams. probably from squids renting the bike and revving the crap out of it.
