| I'm new around here. I'm going to be collecting my 98 Bandit 600 soon. The previous owner reports that the tach has failed. He said that he noticed that it wasn't working, tapped on it and it came back, for a while. Don't know exactly how long. He checked the cable at the tach and the fuses. No problems there. Any idea what might be wrong or how much it might set me back to fix it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have to decide today if I'm going to pick it up this weekend or in 2 weeks.

| yeah, I had that very same thing happen with my twin engined gsx 250. It turned out to be the cam chainn had snapped which meant that the rev counter drive was no longer working. Of course as the engine wasn't working, so the rev counter no longer read anything. I found taping the rev counter had absolutely no effect. Do you think this could be the same problem you've got??? Of course as mine was a twin engined bike, so i still had one engine left (a cunning plan for this very eventuality) so all was not lost. You however 'only' have the one motor, a clear design fault. Of course, what do yuo need the rev counter for??? You should be looking at the road, not gazzing down. Just change gear when you can hear the valves kissing the pistons (actually experince will teach you to change a nanosecond before they actually touch as this slows down the piston speed and hence bike speed). |

| Duh, I thought I had explained it fairly well. So to be more clear. When the cam chain snapped, the flailing end burst through rocker cover and sheared the tacho pick-up wire. Of course my last point of 'why do you need a rev counter anyway' still stands - rev it til it pleads for a gear change, then kick it into the next gear (obviously not using the clutch lever thing, but that is another subject). Of course keep the throttle nailed to the stop at all times. If Suzuki San says you can use 12000 rpm, then use them all on EVERY journey. Must go as Phease is coming back to his PC |
