Default Alternator Cover

Does anyone know any good tricks to removing the alternator cover on my 1982 GS550 Katana? The manual gives no hints, they just say don't pry it at all because you will damage the connecting face of the cover and won't get a good seal afterwards.

The key is that you loosen all the bolts (9 or 10 of em), and then you have a cover that is being held on by magnetism as well. The circumference of the thing makes it very difficult to get any sort of purchase on it with your hands. The best thing would have been if they had actually had the cover threaded as well as the engine block. That way, I could have loosened the bolts so they were out of the engine block but still in the cover, and pulled on them. However, there is no thread in the cover, and the bolts are useless.

I need to remove the cover because there is something producing serious metallic rattling on that side of the engine at 4000 - 4500 rpms and I need to remove the cover to see if I can discover the source of the rattling (likely something loose).

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.
