Default smokin

Hi all Im new to the forum so hopefully im doin this right. I have a 1993 750 kat. It has 20,000 on the motor. My concern is that it seems to blow white smoke out of the exhaust. But it seems to get worse the hotter it gets. Am i looking at re-ringing this thing or is there something else this could be? My neice is trying to sell it to me for $800 do you think it is even worth that amount in this condition? Im sure i can get her to lower her price if i wanted to, she wants that amount cause that is what she paid for it. By the way the bike does have a oil leak somewhere i pulled the side covers off and tryed to locate the leak but it is pretty wet in there it seemed like it might of been coming from the oil cooler. The bike seems to run really good and all the lights work, tires are in good condition, paints a little faded but no dents and there is a small but noticable crack in the right side motor plastic by the mirror. Any advise and or help would be greatly appreciated. I also would like to add that the smoking seems to be worse when you let it sit and ide and then rev it.

Welcome to M-J. It's amazing the number of early Kat owners we have lately!

Could be rings, could be valves, could be a very rich mix. We have a few members who know these bikes pretty well. I'm sure we can get you an answer soon.

Sounds like valves since you mention the sitting and reving scenario. I wouldn't pay what is asked but then she is your niece. How about you agree to buy the bike minus the cost of repairs..... done by yourself of course...if you get it done at a dealer she will be paying you!

It could be quite a cheap ride in the end as it has very low mileage and all that could be wrong is sticky/carbonated valves or similar in the ring dept....(no funny comments Landry!)
What state are the plugs in. If they are oily a set of rings and possibly a rebore is on the cards.

Either way if you cannot do most of the work yourself you are up for big $. If you can do then a set of rings and a rebore shouldn't cost too much. On Ebay there are sets of rings for most bikes at reasonable cost and the rebore should be about $150 or so

Hi guys and thanx for the reply i,m gonna try and get the plugs pulled out sometime this week (no heat in the garage!!) I've worked on cars my whole life but bikes are another story I realize that bike motors work on the same principle as car motors but im just not sure where to begin adjusting valves and such on a bike i know i know i need to get a manual or clymers i just wasnt sure if i was gonna even buy the bike yet but i really like the stance and the ridability of the bike. On the smokin matter if it was the rings wouldnt it run a little sluggish or something seeins how it would be lossing some compression? Do you think maybe i should run some sort of fuel cleaner through it? At any rate i will let you know what kind of shape the plugs are in THANX again for the reply be SAFE ride SAFE live SAFE I almost forgot to ask, you said 20000 wasnt to bad of mileage my brother in law said it was alot what is starting high mileage on a kat. He rides harley's so maybe on that type of motor it would be huh?

ROFL! You've just inadvertently made the qintessential HD joke.

Dude, periods and paragraphs. Please.

About the bike... I'd change the plugs (properly gapped), put some carb cleaner in the tank and ride it for about an hour. Come back the next day and see what's to see. We'll go from there.

Hahaha HD...highly dangerous or historicaly designed or....................

A Kat with 20000 on it is not too high it is only 32000 klms. What is important is how it was treated during those miles.

Look at the bike averall...dents scuff marks rust and general appearance this will tell you a lot about how its been taken care of. People who dont give a damn about how a vehicle looks will generally not care about maintenance either.

As for what Red said that is probably the best thing to do to get a clearer picture of what could possibly be wrong.
