Sounds like a possible vacuum leak (I think . . . I'm no mechanic). Take a close look at all rubber, especially near the carbs.

Other things to consider doing:

-Change plugs
-Synchronize carburetors

First things first. Your problem sounds like an airleak but if you diddled with the carb sync without the vacuum setup tools you will almost certainly have one or more carbs out of sync. This gives the same idle problems you speak of.

Also if one or more carbs are out of sync the motor is trying to run faster on one or more pots while slower on the others so it is fighting itself to provide the power therefore you get less...make sense??? I would get the sync stick/gauges and start from scratch.

1: fit new plugs if in any doubt.

2: Reset the idle screws to spec.... turns out.

3: Reset the idle speed to specs.

4: Attach the sync equipment and sync 3 carbs to the "base" carb.....on mine it is carb# 4....using the syncronising screws fitted to the other three

5: snap the throttle open and closed a few times and recheck the settings of 1 2 and 3 carbs.

Done!

You will need to remove the main fuel tank and fit an auxillary one to gain access to the carbs and have a fuel supply. I use a small lawnmower tank for this purpose. Also watch out for engine overheating...a fan is good for this.
