Default CR125 Ignition problems

I just picked up a 1991 cr125r and i'm having problems with the ignition system. The previous owner has had many problems with spark on this bike. The coil has been replaced and the stator. I need to check the timing because the previous owner tried to change/set the timing because of changing the components and tear down. I have read if the timing is off it could cause overheating, hard starting, etc. Can anyone advise me on the correct procedure for checking and setting the timing? And also checking ohms readings on ig system components? I'm trying to trace down this problem. I suspect the cdi unit is bad but i want to make sure, i dont know if you can test the unit or not. Any help would be apreciated, thank you....

It sounds like the CDI might well be on the way out or already there. I am not sure what test you speak of re the cdi.

A capacitor discharge ignition either works or it doesnt there is no middle ground with this type of ignition and if you are getting no spark and it cannot be tracked down to faults elsewhere then I would take the unit to an auto-electrician to test it.

As regards the timing you will have to get either the specs from the internet/microfiche or a manual.

Sorry I cannot be of more help but as you said yourself you strongly suspect the cdi and as the other main components have already been replaced what else can it be?

Good luck
