Default rm125 clutch not working

OK, I just got an 1994 rm125 to mess around with. Seems to me the clutch is worn or something similar. I checked the clutch line and it is fine now. I had to replace a small thumb adjuster screw. With that done it still will not engage. I am wondering how to check the clutch. I used a vise grip on the peg sticking out of the clutch to make sure that when I pull the lever the peg (bar going into the clutch) was moving all the way. It was so it must be internal.
I am also not familiar with how these work and if I need to be riding the bike for the clutch to engage. Any advise would be great. If it isn't too difficult I could probably take it all apart and replace the worn out pieces. Just need a little advise on how to approach this.
