Default Loose rear axle nut

Ever since I bought my bike, I've had to rely on "guessing" the torque value when tightening the rear axle nut using only the tool that came with the bike; and we all know how useless guessing a torque value is. To further increase my doubt about the rear axle nut being torqued properly, there are times where I feel the rear wheel slightly drifting within turns.

My roommate was nice enough to buy me the 36mm socket that I've been needing to correctly torque the axle nut from the Snap-On truck that comes to the dealership he works at. Last night I was finally able to torque the axle nut properly to 72.5 lb-ft. That mother tightened a full turn! It was rather alarming.

My question is this; could a loose axle nut cause excessive wear to the axle or any other related part?
