Default What Fuel?

What type of fuel should i run in my 78 GS550E?

Should i run a regular 87 octane, the highest 94 or something inbetween?

Never use high octane fuel unless the engine was designed for it, you'd be wasting money and hurting performance.

Use the lowest octane the engine runs well on .

Start with the 87 and you should be okay.

Be sure to follow experience and common sense, and not what the cool kids do. Better yet, get a manual. Uncle Bob has the idea.

AMEN BROTHERS,
I have been riding for many years now, over thirty, you learn a few things doing something you love for so long.
Though I do not know him at all, I can tell you one thing without hesitation, "Uncle Bob" and ROWDY are men of great wisdom!
Truer words are seldom spoken. Though those words need to be shouted from every roof top surounding a new rider.
Learn at you're own pace. let other people ride their machines - you ride yours, and dont let anyone intimedate you into doing something beyond you're skill / experience level.
If you purchased you're bike from a dealer TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEIR NEW RIDER PROGRAM / CLASS! It is probably free or very reasonable wieghed against the benifit you will receive. If you purchased from a private party contact a dealer, DMV or the the local college -Point is - Get some training before too much time passes.
I just wanted to add my two cents to UNCLE BOB'S and ROWDY'S Comments. When I see words like that in these forums, I have to throw my support in!

Hey! I made a good post three years ago. 'Bout time someone noticed, even if it was me.

ya, i noticed that 3-year gap as well. figured it was par for the course, though, since there's been a few reawakenings here recently.
