| okay i have an '81 gs425...not positive ont he year im told its 81... its got fresh gas and carbs cleaned...lines are all good new battery should be good to go as far as i know... i put the key in turn it all the way turnt he gas on, and press the starter button.... nothing happens, not even a whimper the bike hasnt ran in 11 years but nothing is siezed engines turns over and pops witht he kickstart but not enough...there is a switch on the handel bar that says engine stop...ive tried that in the off positiona nd in the on position to the same result its just odd that nothing at all happens when i hit the starter...im assuming im missing somthing...can you tell me if i am...or if im not are there known starter problems with these bikes? all the lights work...horn doesnt though. I'm only 16 this is my moms old bike(lol) but it only has 16k im pretty sure im missing somthing that i have to do to start it...and yes it is in neutral ... if you guys can help me with this itll be greatly apreciated BTW Hi everybody i'm new to the forum |

| after quite a few kicks it did run ...for only a second the first time but after a while it ran for almost a minute...as soon as i took off the choke though it shut off... i wonder if its just a short or blown fuse like you said...ill check the wiring diagram then check the fuses tomorrow now pulling in the clutch..ive noticed that it doesnt do anything...i can go up and down the gears fine but it im in gear and pull the clutch in it stays in gear...ive heard a couple tips for un siezing it that ill try tomorrow...but does the clutch have anything to do with the starter being dead?... any help/ tips you have with workin on old bikes would be nice...even if its not completely relevant to my question... also...once i get it running the muffler on the bike is pretty sad...i think the pipe is about 1/2 at the end IF that. Its stock exhaust, one pipe per side...so with taking off and muffler and just adding a straight pipe would i have to add anything else..etc change timing...add a baffle to the pipes...i know won't be doing this untill it warms up but just so i know what to be ready to do any info would be helpful Last edited by schlutzer; 01-19-2007 at 02:13 AM. |

| He mentioned the clutch because there is a safety switch that prevents the starter from working unless you pull the clutch in, so you don't accidently start it in gear and hurt yourself. As for the dragging clutch, the plates are probably stuck together. With the bike off, put it in about 3d gear, take it off the stand, and rock the snot out of it back and forth as hard as you can. This will often release the clutch plates.

| well yeah i read the wiring diagram and saw the clutch safety switch and im kicking myself about that one, and also i tried rocking it myself but i only weigh 180 so i couldnt get it to budge...one of my older friends tho was able to he weighs over 300 it popped loose on the first throw for him.... so the clutch is good and it runs...but not smooth, i think it will once i reconnect the airbox dont think the bike is supposed to run with it able to suck all the air it wants... thanks for the help its muchly appreciated |
