Default 2 questions from a "new mechanic"

I am trying to winterize my bike myself, I've got a Haynes service & repair manual to help me. So just got a couple of questions. The manual said to remove the plugs and add a teaspoon of oil in the cylinders. I have heard on this site how hard it is to remove the tank, especially full. How hard, really, is this to do by yourself? And is there any other way? Next, it says to replace the plugs back in their caps and ground the plugs against the cylinder head and try starting it (to turn the pistons I am guessing). What do they mean by ground the plug against the cylinder?
I notice lots of people have lots of useful information on here, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Brad
