Default Bike Mechanics Please answer if you can

Mechanics:

Please excuse this very blunt question if you take offense to it...regarding a dealer Periodic Mantenance question.

My Gixxer now has 15K miles on it. I am overdue for the 14.5k periodic mantenance.

The dealership here in York charges $25.00 per sparkplub..and 60 dollars and hour to do all this.

1 1/2 hours to change my oil. I'm looking back on my 7,500 mile check up.

My question..what am I paying for?! And is it worth it?

Right now I am looking for Iridum spark plugs 7.00 max delivered...the oil I can purchase myself. Seems nothing to it. Right side covers off..heat the engine..drain the oil..change the filter..fill with motorcycle oil...remove the other side...replace all four plugs. Tighten all the screws. The inspections of the valve clearances, fuel line, throttle cable play, air supply system, brakes...brake hose..steering, front forks, rear suspension...I wouldn't even know what I am looking at to inspect them; however, the raiator hose, and idle speed I could do.

With what I just said, with not knowing what I mentioned...is it worth now going to the dealer for my checkup? Last time for my 7,500 I paid alittle over 400 bucks. I as a novice believe I can do all the work or what is needed for less than a hundred.

Please tell me if I am wrong.

Sincerely,

Bill

i believe there is a valve adjustment due at that service check your maintenence interval for that. but the price they are charging is normal. basically they should change oil, filter, clean and lube your chain, adjust freeplay in all your cables, adjust the senors on your rear brake pedal, and then do a quit look over the rest of the bike. most shops will charge one hour to replace plugs and do nothing else. if you can do all of this yourself then dont pay them except to do the valve adj. if it calls for it.

Buy the service manual, best investment you can make next to good riding gear.

Have at it.

Very good point..but it says not adjust..but inspect. The bike runs like a top. If they adjust the values then there should be more adjustments...or I should say I am saying that from working on cars.

The service manual yes..but it is only for periodic maintenance I am concerned with. But thank you.

well technically you are right it does say inspect in the charts but in order to adjust you must inspect first. so if they are out of adjustment during the inspection it then turns into an adjustment. as far as your bike running good that is good but if you have a couple of valves a little out of adj. it will not nessecarily cause the bike to run bad so to speak. so at least inspect your valves and adj. if necessary. as far as other adjustmants there really arent any other than i would recommend a throttle body sync. while you are in there. and the new plugs which you were already going to do.

Default Here's what I did

As it turns out..there is a Busa drag racer..that owns a Car modification shop. I stopped in today. Yes I figured I could change the oil..my plugs..but thought..why not just give and pay for someone who I think knows what they are doing and has a history of it. To the left of his car shop is a two bay bike lift shop...specifically for bikes. We'll see.
