Default 82 gs450t wont start

Hi everybody. My son bought athis bike in June. We put a new battery in it from Advanced Auto parts and he's ridden it about 1000 miles this summer. the bike was very pampered and garage stored for the 1st 25 years of its life. 2 weeks ago, he went to start itt and it wouldnt. I had him take the battery out and top it up with distilled water. He said it was about 25% down wheb he had it out. Anyway, he reinstalled it and connected it back up properly, but now it doesn,t Start. My 2 questions are these: A. should we need to put it on a trickle chareger to recharge it, ans B. is this a sign of the alternator or whatever overcharging the battery. Any help or advice is really appreciated. Thanks.

Give the battery a good slow charge overnight, after charging use a volt meter and check the battery it should be around 12.4 to 12.8 volts. Install the battery and start the engine, now check the voltage it should be 13.5 to 14 volts. If the battery voltage does not change with the engine running then you may have wiring or alt problems. If the voltage goes up withe the engine running then not the voltage with the engine stopped and then check it a few hours later to see if the battery voltagt has dropped, if it has then you may have a bad battery or a short in the wiring.
