Default Bike braking or breaking?

While driving my 2001 Yamaha RoadStar, the bike will sometimes suddenly lock up as if the rear brake was being applied. I come to a stop, the engine continues to run, and the rear brake appears to work normally. I turn the engine off, rock the bike back and forth, then start it back up and it runs fine. The problem may not occur again for days.

Could riding on a rough road knock the rear brake into activation or could something be going on inside the engine or transmission?

That just doens't sound like a brake issue to me. Possibly a transmission/drive belt issue.......anyone?

Take the bike in to a service dept. before you run into some slick pavement.
