Default Non starter

I having trouble starting my Suzuki intruder VL125, at first I thought it was a dodgy battery but i'm not so sure.
I charged the battery on a optimate 3 which says its OK, but it will just about start the bike, then If I turn it off then try to start up again there is not enough charge left for another start up (even after riding around for an hour).
I put a meter across the terminals while she was running and only got 11.7 volts from a 12 volt battery, does this suggest a alternater problem?

All help appreciated

If you only got that reading while it was running then it sounds like there is a problem with the charging system a 12v battery needs a votage of around 13.5 or higher to charge.
