Default Katana started rough

Went and looked at a Katana 750 the other day, its a 99 in good shape with 10k on it, gonna get a really good deal $ wise, but i am wondering if any of you can tell me what this means;started it and not realizing it is not fuel injected i didnt **** with the choke at first, and then when the guy adjusted the choke and started it it ran real rough so he started taching it up, and then it ran beautifully... could this mean it needs a tune up, or something bigger wrong with it? thanks for any help, need to know asap.

Could be it hadn't run for a while and needed to flow some gas. Could be the two of you flooded it with your various techniques. Could be it has worn or dirty plugs, fuel filters, air filters, injectors, .... Could mean it has aftermarket exhaust or intake parts that weren't accomodated by the EFI system and it'll continue to start hard and run poorly in cool weather. We could use more details.

Welcome. Almost all threads in a forum are questions. It pays to use more descriptive titles. Edited.

How long has it been sitting.
Consider having it checked by a mechanic. Or at least by a friend, who knows a little about bikes.
10,000 miles in 7 years, will need new tires, chain sprockets, all liquids changed, including brake fluid, maybe brake pads.

Check here for price comparison. If you buy, a service manual would be a good investment.

Mine has moments like that too, seems to be a trend with Katana's, BUT I love mine so I would suggest it all the way.

Kats are cold-blooded. Mine ALWAYS needs the choke on startup. The trick with these bikes is to start with the choke, let idle for about 30 seconds, then close the choke and hold the throttle steady at about 2K for another minute or so. When you let off the throttle and it holds the idle steady, you're ready to head off down the road.
