Default New bike problem, I think.

Hi all. I just got a bike but I notice it takes 2 or so tries to fire it up. I don't give it any throttle when I start it but I should really have to, right? It's only on a cold start, too. It's brand new 2006 with about 52 miles on it. Should I be concerned and take it to the dealer? It's a 2006 GSX-R1000.

I had a gsxr-600 and never had that problem before, so I'm freaked out.

Default New bike start up problems. (merged)

I posted this at another place but it might be more appropriate here.

I'd take it to the dealer, it should fire up in the cold no problem

I wouldn't worry about it. Take the bike out for a long ride, keep the RPMs moderate (don't go near the redline until the engine is well up to temperature), but vary them (don't go 100 miles straight down the highway constantly at 5000 rpm). Put a couple hundred miles on the bike, then change the oil and filter. After that, the bike should start fine.

Ah, good. I was thinking that maybe it was because it wasn't broken in hardly at all. Thanks for the tips.

Hmmm, I got a different response at the Mechanics Corner saying it shouldn't do that at all and take it to the dealer. The problem with taking it to the dealer is that it starts fine after running for a bit. I'd have to ride there and leave it, unfortunately I have no way home after that lol.

Mine fires up right away in the afternoon but sometimes when it's more humid and less warm in the morning it fires up on the 2nd try.

You didn't describe what a "try" is. Would it fire in one try if you cranked it longer? How many seconds to a try?

It will start for a second, idle up then down so low it stalls. I only actually started the bike maybe a dozen times or so. It happens on a cold start but not after its warmed up. It's about 70-ish degrees here so it's not like it's freezing outside.

Now I notice that the chain seems to be a little loose. It's about 1 1/4 play in it, unless that about right. If not.. I may just go back to the dealer and tell them to do a once over on it. Do you think they'll charge me for doing that?

That's about right for the chain. Loose is better than tight, to a point anyway.

I wouldn't take it back with 52 miles on it. That'd be embarrassing. Go ride the thing once or twice first. Maybe it'll sort itself out.

Lol, why would I be embarassed for taking my bike to get checked out? 52 miles on it or not, if I think something's not right with it, I'll have them check it out. Anyway, thanks for the replies but I'm headed to the dealership tomorrow.

Dude I gotta ask..........

.........you are pulling the choke out right? I know it's FI, but even our FI bikes have some sort of choke on them. If I forget to pull the choke in the morning, it will start, but only idle for a second, then stall, and boy do I feel dumb when I do that! lol

Just giving you a hard time, bud. When I get a new bike I usually have 52 miles on it by dinner.

I think it has an auto choke. I don't see a lever on the bars like I had on my
'02 600.

It's been raining here since I got the bike or there would be more than 52 miles on it. The next sunny day looks like next Monday.

lol, awesome. I had to ask! A lot of times a "problem" with a bike/car is just somebody forgetting about something.

There are more tiny thing that I notice now. It seems that they never did the pre delivery check up on it. I still think the chain is looser than it should be, it hits the swingarm when I push up on it. I have to push the clutch lever out with my fingers after shifting, it idles rough, the suspension pre load is uneven....geez. Now watch, they try and charge me to fix all that. I'm about to call them now to see if they blow me off as if it was nothing like they did the other day.

You might have to play hardball with them. They're under obligation to both you and Suzuki to properly set up the bike. Don't back down!

I just called them, told them everything that I had issues with. I asked if I was going to be charged for all of that and she said," If we have to adjust the throttle or clutch or anything, we'll have to charge for that." Then I was told to just wait until the first service to get all that checked out. That's not really the point of having the bike set up right the first time.
So now, I have to wait until Saturday to have them look at it, then unload on them about the bill.
