Default My Baby Wont Start :( (merged)

Last year i bought my first motorcycle it ran great, the guy i bought it from told me i needed an oil change and plug change.. well im not a very good mechanic so i had my dad come over and we changed the oil and plugs... well before we changed it all.. i started the bike and it ran fine..( this was like 1 week prior to changing the stuff) then all of a sudden it died.. so i looked at the oil level and it was VERY low.. so i didnt try to restart it... so i figured ok this is a good time for the oil and plug change.
so as i mentioned before me and my dad changed the oil and plugs.. well then after the oil and plug change i started it up.. and it was running but the sound it made was VERY different than the high pitched whine i was used to.. it was a more LOW BOGGY sound... well then the bike stalled and it wont start again.. it turns over fine but it will nto start... so i checked the fuel... feul was low so i put some fuel in it i had kicking around... didnt change anything... it still wouldnt start.. so does anyone know what my problem might be? and if you need to know any other facts please ask.. the bike is a Suzuki GS 550E 1981.. please help me guys!

You may have to wait more than 14 minutes for an answer. Weekends are slower on the forum. Welcome.

What's "very low"? A quart? Two? You very well have ruined the engine running it that low. What oil did you use and how much did it take?

well at the time it looked very low.. like i couldnt see it in the sight glass.. but when i drained it i got ALMOST 4 quarts out of it... and it wasnt even very dirty. when i put oil in it i used the oil it asked for im not sure of the wieght i think the manual asked for 10w30 but it was like valvoline or just some average brand yeah i think it was valvoline and it took 4 and 1/2 quarts to fill it

Did you have a manual, how much oil does the manual call for on an oil change when the filter is replaced. If it says 3.6 qts. that is all you put in.
If you are not changing the filter it will call for a smaller amount like 3.2 qts.

The numbers used here are not the ones for your bike, but examples.

If overfilled, drain oil and fill to required amount without filter change.
Do not use automotive oil, but motorcycle specfic oil, as auto oil has friction modifiers in it.

If it had that much oil in it I seriously doubt you wrecked the engine. So you changed the oil and the plugs. Did you gap the plugs properly? Aside from that, there's not much that could have changed. I'd start doing some general troubleshooting. Do you have a service manual yet?

yes i do have the manual and my father did the gapping of the plugs its possible he could have gapped them wrong but would that cause the bike to run boggy then die and not restart?

Probably not. I'm working through the troubleshooting process. The first place to look is at what recently changed. Are they the correct plugs? Maybe they got fouled. If the spark was in the wrong spot or too hot/cold it could change the sound of the engine. Eventually they might get carbon or oil fouled.
