Default Quest about adding after market exhaust

About to purchase a bike.
Have 2 neighbors that are long time riders.
1 of those 2 neighbors and I are both car guys..... so here is my question, on a comment/debate we had about one bike I was looking at.

Shouldnt the standard practice be, that if you add high flowing (and usually louder) exhaust to a stock bike, you should install the proper jet kit (if carbed) or chip (if fuel injected).

My theory on this... is if you have decreased the backflow pressure, you have increase the bikes ability to breath. A bike I was looking at had Vance and Hines exhaust but no jet kit, and would backfire some upon throttle. To me, this theory would place any bike that has such aftermarket exhause into running in a LEAN state. A LEAN state in turn would have higher temperatures and eventually could lead to a hole in the piston... right?

My question is am I correct in my thinking here, that you should always do the exhaust with a jetting kit, to get the mixture back in a proper state during combustion ? If someone did NOT install the jet kit, at what point ( average miles driven without a jet kit, and when in the life of a cycle- ie: one of the ones I was looking at like this only had 640 miles on it).. is there a point of damage to the motor....

Thoughts, comments ?? Am I all wet ??
Thanks in advance... maybe Ill have a bike tomorrow

What bike have you got?
On my Gixer K1 it is ok to add a race can with no other work as the bikes internal brain can do slight adjustments to the fuelling, I think its up to about 5% difference, but if you also added something like a K&N air filter then you have to look at either a rolling road tune up or get a power commander and download the most suitable map.

It would either be a 2004 Suzuki Volusia 800 or a 05/06 C50 , thus the statement about carbed and or fuel injected.

Thoughts?

There is some leeway on the pipes, a check of plug state will tell you wether to rejet or remap (flash) the FI bike.
Changing to an K&N or other breather would mean rejetting or, in the case of the C50, flashing the bike or adding a FI system such as Techclusion, or other
FI system.

Both bikes are the VL800, the Volusia is carb. and the C50 is the FI unit.
Either version would be a good buy.

There is a lot of info on the site in regards to these bikes. Just use the search function.
