Default 92 gsx600 runs like crap

i bought the bike and had the petcock rebuilt because it leaked gas. the carbs leaked as well so they had to be fixed, gaskets o-rings and such. i put new fuel lines on it and it ran great. but slowly the perormance started to dimenish. a slight hesitation in the low rpm range for startersand when i had it over 100 mph it was lagging like it didnt have the power to carry it much faster than 115 or so. well the throttle resonse got worse in the low rpm range, before it took like half a second to get from 1000 to 6000 rpm now takes probably a full second. after that i was riding it and i noticed it tryin to stall about five minutes after gettin on the highway and surely enough it spit and sputtered and came to a stop. i tried to start it but it took about 5 to 10 minutes for it to seem like it would even fire but al of a sudden it started with no problem but the problem persisted all the way home, it did the samed thing a few times on the way back to the house. i cheacked the spark plugs and the number 1 was lightly stripped but would still tighten up. and also ont the number 1 spark plug the wire was really loose so i tried to put it back as tightly as i could. they were in good shaped though and hardly dirty and not wet at all. one of my friends ----ed the the petcock and turns it to far and the little clamp that holds it on came loose so i just put it back on so it could be damaged but im not too sure about it...i took the airbox off and the carbs look clean but i could be wrong. they are jetted and it has a k n air filter if that helps but i put all the stuff back together and it still runs the same. what could it be. fuel or electrical. oh and sometimes when it would start i would hit the throttle a little and it would cut out and die. but when i turned on the choke it would stay running but this problem doesnt occur all the time...some one help.thanks.

i took the caps off the top of the carbs and one of the rubber boots has a small cut in it...could that be a big part of the problem. and i also picked up some sea phone and took the bottom of the carbs off and sprayed everything well with carb cleaner...hope it will make a difference...

ok...i took off the carbs and just sprayed the insides with carb cleaner...then i noticed that one of the wires were off of the coil so i put it back i guess that resolved one of my issues but now when i put it back together it revs straight to 4 to 6 grand and backfires a lot...what could it be...i didnt mess with any screws or anything like that so everything that the factory pre set should still be the same...thanks but please help...

Yep. Coil wire will do it. Make sure that they are all tight, and that they are tight on the plugs too.
