Default Backfire, No start. Kind Of. 99 Katana 600

Anyway bike has been running great with the exception of a little ticking noise from the top end, may even be the cam chain.
I went to start the bike today, it has not been run in about 4-5 days now. When cranking the starter came to an abrubt halt with a little grind noise. Second attempt same thing, third attempt and it seemed as if it didn't even turn over (full battery) and KABANG! Backfire. Scared the crap out of me. On the fourth attempt it started and ran fine. Sems to be pushing a little blue/black smoke on warmup although I thinnk this is normal. And keep in mind that the tank is at about 1/4 full and is on the stabilized gas from last years storage.

Anyone know what happened here? I hate to be in town and have the same thing happen after work at 11pm and not have the bike start.

Thanksi n advance
JRE

did you put a bunch of iol in the cylinders for storage? If so you should have removed the plugs and cranked for a while first. If not that, possable that one of the carbs leaked fuel into the cylinder and may have hydrolicked a cylinder slightly. oh well, she's running now right?
